LCA, EPD and Product Carbon Footprint: Choose the Right Output
Last reviewed: 2026-10-03
Start with the question your customer or project needs answered. An LCA, an EPD and a product carbon footprint can use related information, but they are different outputs with different boundaries and intended uses.
| Output | Main purpose | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| LCA study | Assess environmental impacts of a defined product system | Goal, unit, boundary, methodology, data and review needs |
| EPD | Publish an environmental declaration under programme requirements | Applicable programme/PCR, product scope, verification and publication |
| Product carbon footprint | Quantify greenhouse-gas emissions for a defined product system | Unit, boundary, methodology, data and any verification requirement |
Define the use before collecting data
A study for internal design decisions may need a different output from a customer-facing declaration. Product grouping, manufacturing sites, source-data periods and intended comparisons should be established early. This reduces the risk of producing a technically detailed report that does not satisfy the customer’s actual request.
Do not overstate the result
An EPD is not automatically proof of environmental superiority. A product footprint does not by itself establish carbon neutrality. Nor is a normal LCA or footprint automatically suitable for CBAM, which has scheme-specific requirements.
ConformArc can coordinate scope and specialist workstreams where available. Explore Sustainability or request a review. Confirm current programme and standard editions for the project; do not carry an old edition forward without checking.
