ATEX vs IECEx: Plan Around the Destination Market

Last reviewed: 2026-10-03

ATEX and IECEx are not interchangeable names for one certificate. ATEX relates to EU requirements, while IECEx is an international conformity-assessment system. The destination market and product context determine what is needed and how evidence may be used.

Define the equipment before the route

Describe the product, its intended explosive-atmosphere use, gas or dust context and relevant protection information. Identify whether the equipment is electrical, non-electrical or an assembly. If the customer has specified a category, equipment protection level or other requirement, include it in the initial review.

Separate testing, production and certification work

An assessment project can involve multiple evidence and quality-related workstreams. The responsible technical parties and independent decision makers should be identified in the scope. Avoid accepting a proposal that simply promises a certificate without explaining the product and route it covers.

Check market acceptance explicitly

Do not assume one system automatically substitutes for another in every country. Confirm destination requirements before testing, particularly where the same product is being supplied to several markets.
